Culture

From a whole palette of cultural monuments and sights found in this region, let us highlight the already mentioned Listina slavnog Dragoslava dating from 1100, the “birth certificate” of Dobrinj and Dobrinjsko. Two religious buildings are closely associated with this document. The first is the Parish Church of Saint Stephen (Kapitulska crkva svetog Stjepana) in Dobrinj, one of the oldest religious buildings in this part of the island of Krk.

A wooden porch called cergan was built in front of this parish church a few centuries later but the exact year of its construction and the person who ordered it are still unknown. This three-nave church boasts an altar relief painting called Coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Krunjenje Djevice Marije) from the beginning of the 16th century.

The other religious building mentioned in Listina slavnog Dragoslava is the Chapel of Saint Vitus (Crkvica svetog Vida) located in the village bearing the same name (Sveti Vid) situated not far from Dobrinj. The construction of the chapel ended in 1100. In the 18th century this chapel started deteriorating and at one point in time it also served as a shed. During the 1940s it was fully renovated and its religious function was fully restored.

There used to be as many as seven churches in Dobrinj. The two preserved ones are the main church and the Church of the Holy Trinity (Crkva svete Trojice), locally known as the Church of St. Anthony (Crkva svetog Antuna), with an interesting altar painting presenting hell, purgatory and heaven. This church rarely serves its religious function and during the summer months it is used as an exhibition space.
The religious museum collection in Dobrinj opened in 1981 is a true treasury of Glagolitic manuscripts. The collection includes a certified transcript of Listina and the famous antependium by Veneziano dating from the 14th century. The Religious Museum displays a true curiosity: procession crosses from the 17th century presenting Mary on one side and Jesus on the other. In addition to the private Barbalić Collection, Dobrinj also has a large Ethnographic Collection of the Island of Krk displayed on three floors. The holdings are thematically divided and were collected over decades from all parts of the island of Krk. Thanks to the world renowned collector and patron, Peter Infeld, Dobrinj has for the past few years also been a meeting point of lovers of fine art. Each summer, the Infeld Gallery, one of the largest galleries in Croatia, organizes exhibitions by the most famous domestic and world artists presenting different artistic styles, from naive to pop art.

The Glagolitic Trail (Put) and the Glagolitic Alley (Aleja) in Gabonjin are the reminders of the Glagolitic tradition, one of the trademarks of this region. Step by step, stone by stone… and there is your opportunity to enjoy a pleasant yet useful educational walk along the forest trail and path of the ancestors which will make your study of this ancient Croatian alphabet so much easier and more fun. Among the cultural monuments the significance of which goes beyond Dobrinjsko we should mention also the Baroque altar painting found in the Chapel of Saint Clement in Klimno (Crkvica svetog Klementa). This painting that presents the lives of the saints together with their symbols is yet another protected cultural monument. In the center of Klimno, opposite the chapel, you will notice a rather big anchor. Its purpose is to remind you that one of the oldest shipyards on the island of Krk was founded in Klimno.
The Biserujka Cave also called the Vitezić Cave located in Rudine is both a cultural monument and an interesting attraction. The same is true of Vela gromača (Large Drywall) situated not far from Kras. This large drywall might as well be called the largest drywall as it truly represents the biggest collection of stones on the island. It is located on the highest part of the island of Krk, on the summit called Sveti Juraj (Saint George) at 311 meters above sea level.
