History

The first written record of Dobrinj and the history of Dobrinjsko dates back to 1100. That year, a nobleman called Dragoslav (mentioned in the document as Dragoslav the Famous) decided to bestow a gift to the Church of St. Stephen in the form of a newly built Chapel of St. Vitus located not far from Dobrinj.

A village which had until then been nameless thus got its name, Sveti Vid (Saint Vitus). With the relevant deed of gift, Dobrinj got its “birth certificate” and the Croatian Glagolitic heritage was enriched by one of the earliest and most significant diplomatic texts. Listina slavnog Dragoslava is one of the first written records of Dobrinjsko although the toponyms and archaeological findings speak in favor of the belief that the history of Dobrinj goes further back into the past. Dobrinj has always been the administrative, cultural and political center of this region. It might be due to this very fact that in the past Dobrinj used to be destroyed and exposed to attacks by Uskoks and numerous other invaders and thieves on numerous occasions. Many things have been stolen from Dobrinj yet even more have been preserved by the local people. Among the things preserved are also the Glagolitic manuscripts, i.e. documents bearing witness to the life, people and traditions of Dobrinjsko. The citizens of this region managed to pass their authentic dialect called čokavica, a variant of the Chakavian dialect specific only to Dobrinjsko on the entire territory of Croatia, from one generation to another. Dobrinj and Dobrinjsko have changed various rulers, states, official languages and systems but in spite of everything and everyone, the primeval features of the region have been preserved in every aspect and shape. This is why this region has been rightfully proclaimed one of the cradles of Croatian culture and literacy.
